Let's Begin
Congratulations on your decision to build a better you. You might have taken too long a break after New Years Day or just remembered that the monthly gym membership you pay for should finally be put to good use but either way, here we are. Investing in a personal trainer has been proven to be the best way to gain results and you're ready to take the plunge. However, the field can seem very saturated and when you feel that way, it seems like the more choices you have, the less choices you have.
Choosing the perfect fitness coach will require some light footwork but the benefits will be immensive. No matter what your goals may be, the right coach will not only cut the time in half without one, but keep it immersive, educational and more notably, fun.
So, let's simplify the process as best we can. I have listed and detailed some of the most important factors in choosing the right fitness coach for you. They are:

Your personal goals. Easily the number one factor to begin your search. Are you into weight loss? Do you want to bench press 225lbs? Are you looking to shave off time on your 100-meter dash? The very first step is choosing a coach with an expertise in what you want to accomplish. This will help to set up a good foundation a step in the right direction.
Your Fitness level/experience. If you're just getting into the habit, then you should look for a coach that is patient with newcomers to fitness. The best way to test their temperament is to ask lots of questions. If they aren't patient with the selection process, chances are they aren't the right trainer for you. If you're more experienced, then search for the trainer that can do what you do, but better.
Their Fitness level/experience. Regardless of what you may think, experience matters. Building a nice physique for 10 years means less if the coach has only been training for 10 days. The opposite is also true, as reading about delayed onset muscle soreness and progressive overload doesn't mean as much to a trainer that hasn't felt it by working out themselves. Your new coach should have a healthy balance of fitness and coaching experience.
Looks. I was sure to not make this the number one factor, but it is definitely still and important one. Whether you accept it or not, vanity is a major part of the fitness world and how a fitness coach carries their looks will either add or take away from their credibility.
Personality. You're not going to listen or take direction from someone you don't like or trust, no matter how accredited they may be. This is just human nature. Don't run from this. Chemistry is a very important factor when it comes to coaching. This is just another factor that puts the "personal" in personal training.
Fitness IQ/Continuing Education. Hiring a fitness coach is important to you because you're on a mission to be become a better version of yourself. This should also be reflected in your choice of fitness coach. Your trainer should also be looking for ways to improve their craft or their business. Whether it's gaining another certification, starting their own business, or entering into a fitness competition, you will always keep improving under a coach who is also always improving.

Follow these quick, simple guidelines and you will find yourself in the presence of the right person to help you on your journey to become the best version of yourself. If you apply these rules correctly, the right coach will appear, and you watch your gains become fruitful and multiply!
